love the feature alot but let me understand this feature more deeply. i'm already successfully using php to load another php file in the unreadable folder BUT lets say a html file on my site asks to load a image from the unreadable/images folder than it will load it? and if someone tries to copy the link to that same image and paste it into their browser it will not? if this would work that would eliminate hotlinking from other sites totally!

No. As this folder is accessible only for other files on the server. This is not accesible for a browser. And a browser is loading separetally HTML, CSS files, images etc.

the only way that would be possible is if you use GD to display the image.

Not only. And what about simple fpassthru() ? Smiley

In this model the the links to your images will be replaced with links to the PHP files *outside* of this protected folder and that files will passtrough the images from protected folder. But also the same links to the same PHP files can be linked from any other website, so there is still need to use some additional code inside of them to disable hotlinking of those PHP files. And as the same is done by global 110mb .htaccess so there is no need to additionally taking the PHP processes to pass trough all files. But if someone want to - he can. I will most probably will do this just for the purpose to allow hotlinking for only specific websites without having .htaccess enabled.

sweet, i just put a SMF SQLite db in there and it works great!

BTW if any one is wondering how in Core Configuration just add "unreadable/"  before the db name then youll get a db not found error or something, then move the db to the directory and hit refresh it works great Wink

Sorry if some one already said this Duh

So if I create ex.110mb.com/unreadable/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/file.php will it still be private? Is there a directory limit in "unreadable" for it to be unreadable?

Yes, subdirectories are protected as well.

URI/URL length is limited by any special coding of the httpd daemon and/or the browser being used.

RFC-2616, "Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1," does not specify any requirement for URL length.

That is for a typical GET request though.

POST requests act differently as the POST data is sent in the document headers and not in the URL, so realistically it can go beyond the limitations browsers set for URL charactor limits.

I think IE is somewhere around a 2000 to 2100 character limit.

In order owner-group-user: 640 (rw-r-----) for files, 740 (rwxr-----) or 750 (rwxr-x---) for folders. 0 digit always appear in the permissions for security reason. Chmod 777 for upload or download database, then set chmod to 770.
All chmod for each owner or group ( mods ) or user describe below:
Quote
0 --- no permission
1 --x execute
2 -w- write
3 -wx write and execute
4 r-- read
5 r-x read and execute
6 rw- read and write
7 rwx read, write and execute

But wouldn't it be possible to download the site using some freeware and then access the file? I recommend not using it for extremely important stuff such as usernames and passwords.

no, not in the /unreadable/ directory.

the only way to access for public display would be to intentionally stream the data through php and intentionally output it to the browser.

I just wonder if the "unreadable" directory will also make the subdirectories unreadable.
Im just relatively new to this feature, so Id rather try my own..  afro

It should make any file/directory in it unaccessible via HTTP.

Description: Basically you MOVE any files you don't want search engines indexing or other people accessing through their browser, into a folder called "unreadable". (Create "unreadable" in your root. Root is the first location you see when you access FTP or file manager.)

And ONLY YOU (though FTP or file manager) or YOUR ACCOUNTS files can access files within "unreadable" folder.

=======
Example:
=======

If you move a file "database.txt" into "unreadable" and you go to: http://USERNAME.110mb.com/unreadable/database.txt, it doesn't exist because it's totally INVISIBLE.

But if another file in your account was to call http://USERNAME.110mb.com/unreadable/database.txt, then it'll show the file contents as normal.

This was designed for free users (with no htaccess support), to protect anything they want.

How this feature works:

1. Create a directory "unreadable" in your root. Root is your first place you see when you log into FTP or file manager.

2. Now place or move any file or folder you want inside it.

3. That's it. It's 100% protected from Search engine spidering or anyones eyes, except you and your accounts files.

I recommend you CHMOD "unreadable" to: 777 or 770 (same as 777)

where can i find root?
