So an idea hit me today.
How awesome would it be if I had an external hard drive that you could see the moving parts in? As in, a clear top panel, and the rest of the case metal. I did some looking around and was sad to find that they don't sell these.
So why not do it myself? A quick look on newegg shows I can get a 80gb SATA drive for 35$ - pretty cheap if I screw it up. I've taken apart an old ATA drive before - 6 screws took off the top panel, easy as that. It wasn't vacuum sealed, just some caulk like stuff sealing it.
So my idea - buy a hard drive, fabricate a plexiglass lid for it, remove the old one and put on the new one, and enjoy the awesomeness!
But what I need to know is this - What precautions should I take when opening a hard drive? I know the obvious, don't touch it/shake it/avoid moisture/dust. But are they vacuum sealed these days? If I let room temperature/humidity air get inside will it hurt it? Would a miniscule amount of dust hurt it either?
But hey. How AWESOME would a clear HD be? Tell me what you think.

Only way to see if it'll work is to try it yourself. Then you can start making them and selling them for like $100+ . Sounds like it would be a very interesting thing to watch.

they are metal for a reason. the metal shields the data a bit more than plastic from electromagnetic interference and it dissipates heat better also.

if you remember the 90s, you'll remember those transparent phones that lit up when someone phoned you. They were all the rage and you could see the interior - also they had that clear gameboy which came out much later but wasn't as cool. This looks sorta like the phone, not sure if its the exact model that became popular

Dont open hard drives i will explain why:
There is some sort of reading/writing part in it wich is as big as 1/10 part of e piece of dust. If it hit such a dust piece the reading head will break and you can throw away ur hard disk cuz that part is the most expensive one.
So i dont think it will work for you but you can try to seal it after again.
The magnetic interferance someone else was talkin about is a little true but not as dangerous as what i did write above here.

I was thinking of doing this to prevent stuff from getting in the drive - when I take off the old lid, I'll slide it to the left and slide the plexiglass right into place so there is VERY little opportunity for stuff to get in... They were all the rage and you could see the interior - also they had that clear gameboy which came out much later but wasn't as cool. Lmao I just got a random idea - put a spiral sticker on the center of the discs so when it spins it spirals LOL. Kinda impractical ¬.¬ My brother had that one =D

they spin so fast that you wont even see it spiral. most today do 7200 rpm and any touch to the platter wil mostlikely ruin it. the dust think im not worried about there are tiny filters in ther to catch the dust but i would be worried about humidity and electromagnetic exposure especially in a computer near power supplies or monitors.
