Here's the blueprint, and here's the project.

Basically, it's Ubuntu running on a CoLinux kernel. That means Ubuntu running as Windows processes. It would be more efficient than virtualization, and much easier to try. IMO, Wubi just sets up a crippled version of Ubuntu; if you're willing to go that far, you might as well install the real thing; and if you're not, CoUbuntu should work just fine. What do you think? Duh

Less intrusive than wubi, easy to try, easy to remove, seems really useful.

Well, it's not exactly watered down, but let's just say that it does not run at maximum efficiency off a loop-mounted filesystem, and there's less filesystem protection.

Yes. It's just not included in the official images; hence, the blueprint.

I'm happy with the Wubi version. It doesn't seem watered down or less of ubuntu than a full install. And I did a full install on my external hard drive, and just booted from it instead of my internal just to make sure. Same thing either way. Therefore, this... is pointless to me.

Wubi *is* watered down, and this is likely less "watered down" than Wubi, at least it supports hibernation.

I'll ask you this. What is the purpose of having an operating system that you have to run inside of another operating system? That totally defeats the purpose. I'll stick with my dual-boot WinXP and Ubuntu with Wubi. There's not a thing wrong with running it this way. It keeps both OS' seperate and functional as they each are SEPERATELY supposed to be.

But it makes Ubuntu run under a virtual loopmounted filesystem. It gives the feeling of not being watered down, while it is. You should never install Wubi for anything outside testing, and for testing, Wubi is completely unnecessary, much too complex for most testing use.

CoUbuntu lets you test it, easily. And it does that, testing, much easier than Wubi, unnecesarily complex for the same job.

For testing, sure. Cobuntu would be fine. I like the Wubi version just fine for my usage of Ubuntu. Really I don't even use it for much other than playing games at the moment.

But Wubi shoudn't be used to replace an actual partition. It's nowhere near as stable as a real installation (esp, fs/crash/hard-reboot wise)

Seeing as I don't have those issues, and I know how to run a computer without having those issues, I'm really not that concerned with it. This is another of those opinion things. My opinion is that, For ME, it's fine as it is.
