After months of trying to decide on a domain name i finally picked one from the website 110mb offers, using my name.
happy about my decision, I told some friends and they told me it was a bad idea.
could someone tell me why?

  • i really like the idea because its easy to remember, spell and brand.
  • it could be used as a resume for web design.
  • it easily relates to all the things i want to add to the website (Tutorials [main focus] and Flash Games Gallery [in a subdomain])

but i understand that it could be a bad idea because people could use my name for identity theft or to "hack" me somehow.

tell me what you think.
should i keep it or not?

Random info:
Will use drupal 6 for Tutorial site and Arcadem Pro for Games (might use another cms for games).
So far i have a 3 month trial and its been about a month so any opinions ASAP are appreciated.

Not related to the question:
A sentence like "help support this site by clicking on the ads please" is forbidden by Google.
If Google will find out - you'll be banned from AdSense. Be aware.
Your visitors have to click on ads intentionally, if they will be interested,
you can not force or ask your visitors to do that.

Are you talking about "vet.110mb.com" ?
I don't see anything wrong with this subdomain name.

It's probably some hidden sexual reference that your friends made up to be funny, but it's not really anything. Idiots.

ok i'll remove that later today

and no i bought a domain name
victor(mylastnamehere).com
(im a bit paranoid at the moment)

but im having regrets after hearing that it wouldn't be in my best interest as my full name is sensitive information

i've tried to look for a domain name that wasn't taken that was short and combined tutorials and games as those would be the things i would put on it.

technically its not a 110mb.com subdomain but i was wondering if the people from this forum could help me with my domain name dilemma.

Oh for god sakes, it's a last name, if people really want to know who you are they will look you up, nothing in this world is hidden, nearly every record of when you're born, when you die, ect. is online.

Yeah... manicgames is right. Besides, people can usually look up your name and address quite easily regardless of what your domain is.

It doesnt matter what name you pick

http://whois.sc
search your domain and boom! Hi Victor.

It doesn't matter, its public info anyway unless you pay for it not to be and even then it can be accessed.

The majority of people do not need a domain. Domains are overrated for personal use, too many people buy domains without really needing them. A subdomain will suffice - no one expects a personal blog or a simple few pages to have it's own domain. If your site is a personal site, and you're not starting a company or trying to mass market it - you don't need to worry about a domain. You can go with a uni.cc or afraid if you want something more custom or shorter, but ultimately it's the same thing. Subdomains are good and hey it's still free Smiley

You do realize that unless you paid extra for info hiding, that I can whois any domain you own and find our exact address, don't you? I have a site with my last name in it (matt-shaffer.com). IMO it looks professional, is easy for anyone to remember, and is quite unique. But, I know there's at least 20 other matt shaffer's in the world, and mattshaffer.com was already taken. It's a big world. Don't fret too much over it, I have yet to have hatemail or a bomb delivered to my house.

Adios. Contact info is in profile. Might want to email me any IM details first, or I won't add you.

There's always time for a surprise  wink  j/k

The biggest problem is spam, there are some people with no better things to do then to collect email addresses and information that way. They use it to spam or for identity theft.

thanks for the opinions i had a few of these things in mind and its good to know that im not the only one.
i simply doubted my decision but i think i'll stick with the domain name. its convenient.
it is some what a personal page but not a blog. i want it to be where i can make tutorials and share games in a different way or with a different theme.
i think my goals are a bit ambitious since its been done before.
i just want to improve it somehow.

sites like miniclips and newgrounds dominate the online flash game world i just want to make my own version of it.
even if my site won't be too well known that just means that its not blocked by school and work firewalls Duh

The tutorials i want to make vary from text to video to animation i haven't decided yet how it'll work out but its all in my head.
i hope i don't get too lazy and it never happens.

once again thanks for replying.
