My friend asked me to set up Xubuntu on his system and my live cd would not work as he has 128 mb ram so I came home and decided to download the alternate cd........ I started it a week ago and I kept putting it off cuz I only have to install it next week.......... lol.....So anyway while I was downloading it stopeed at around 50% and said that the file was not found....I checked my email id and nothing........no new updates but at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/hardy/release/ a new version had appeared......... Why would they do something like this without notifying ppl about the update no matter how small it is?.............

Are you sure it's a new version? If it is, they'd blog about it, and if they blog about it, what's the point of emailing if you can get the feed?

Oh, they'd been talking about 8.04.1 since before 8.04 was released, so it's a rather predictable version You should just upgrade if you'd already installed 8.04; the process should be like any other routine minor upgrade. And sometimes the file appears on the website before they make the announcement (to make sure all mirrors have it), but I don't think this is the case.

Then they should delete the old version after the announcment..........And I was downloading the alternate cd to install on my friends comp as he only has 128mb ram and the main cd wont work(live cd install and direct install) as it keeps getting stuck

That's not the way things work. They don't delete their downloads until they've reached the end of the support period. 8.04 is a LTS version, so it'll be supported for three years. Otherwise, it's a year and a half.
Besides, 8.04.1 is just another name for 8.04-with-some-updated-packages... hardly anything to get upset over. Just install and upgrade, eh? It'd be the same.

Well the file was deleted as I was downloading it and all the mirrors also deleted it. I know hardy is a LTS edition and all but the thing that irritated me was the fact that around 250 - 260 mb of the iso was already downloaded.....
Oh and they may not delete the downloads but dont they delete the older versions and upload the ones where the bugs are fixed..........

Osnap? Because versions down to 6.06 (LTS) are still available at the mirrors. Like... http://mirror.fslutd.org/linux/distributions/ubuntu/release/cd/Oh, and the server does not terminate a download if the file's moved, renamed, or removed. The filesystem does not kill a reference to a file if it's still in use. It sounds to me like a client-server connection problem, which is common for large files. I prefer to get my ISO's off bittorrent these days.

Hm, I guess they did remove it and redirect 8.04 to 8.04.1. But that should not have terminated the download. I'm guessing that as soon as the connection error occurred, the server thought the connection was dropped and allowed the old file to die. Try bittorrent next time, so you don't lose hair over broken downloads

Sometimes I think developers feel stupid. And they sneak a update out hoping they don't have to release that they mispelled the word Open 20 times in the software as "Ohpen" so they fix it. And do it stealthy like software making ninja's..
I could be wrong of course.. Don't look at me like that... lol

I'm like a ninja, wrapped in shalon monks, riding on flying carpets, with the king of asia behind me with 1000 swords in flying force...
Wait, this isn't a Jackie Chan movie... Whoops...
