Many people liek windows, including me, I love how many apps are out there and games, but I've made a decision: I'm installing Ubuntu. My computer has always had difficulties with windows, windows doesn't like my hardware, and hangs on occasions or bluescreens me (always with the RAM) so I decided to install ubuntu. currently, I'm deleting the windows partition and giving ubuntu the full HDD to work with. It's going to take a 3:30 hour but it'll be worth it, I tried it before and I liked it. adn that was 7.04 I think. now we're up to 8.10 Wish me good luck, recommend me ubuntu software, etc thanks:)

you shouldnt have deleted windows, if you dont like ubuntu you will have nothing to go back to one its removed, you would have to buy another copy

I thought of that I checked to see if I still had my OEM Windows XP install CD I got with the PC, I have it So far I like Ubuntu though, no problems, all works, didn't even have to install drivers for my printer.. WHat's my advantage is I didn't play games so I won't miss that, and also my app's I liked, like mp3 player or msn, itś all available for ubuntu, as well note: you may see I have to get used to the keyboard settings xD

You'd still have the CD, veggie. If you don't like Ubuntu, there are always other choices out there.

Windows Vista came with my laptop and I didn't even get a setup disk... just a recovery partition. I nuked that, but backed up a disk image before I did that.
@JvH: there's a lot of quality software for Ubuntu, you're going to have to tell us what you want to do before we could recommend any =p Off the top of my head: Inkscape is great for SVG editing, Pidgin and Empathy are nice IM clients (with Empathy being integrated into Gnome). Depending on your hardware you could have some fun with aircrack/airpwn...

When I bought my laptop I didn't get any discs with it and there was no recovery partition either. What I did was download a copy of Windows XP OEM and then used the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) that is on a sticker on the bottom of my laptop.
It's perfectly legal to do. As long as you have a valid COA it doesn't matter where you got the install files from.

Does the OEM image have to match the hardware? It's perfectly legal to do. As long as you have a valid COA it doesn't matter where you got the install files from. Indeed; it's the license that matters.

Nope, the OEM image that I grabbed was a plain copy with just the default XP drivers, nothing specific to any manufacturer and it still had to be activated. The only thing special about it was that it had SP3 slip streamed.

thatś about what I needed:) just some browsing (firefox on here, my standard ) msning, emailing (is there a ubuntu client working for hotmail?) aircrack/airpwn sound cool, but I don have a laptop, itś a desktop hmm, my printer seems to be unable to print in ubuntu, it printed the first page and then quickly shut down itself? oh well, i guess I have to download some drivers anyway thanks for the tips you all

Wireless seems to always be a problem with nix; but sometimes it's not (random). Glad your hardware is working out with linux cause sometimes it doesn't, and a different distro will run perfectly fine .

I might have to go hunting for an OEM Windows Vista Home Premium installer, though I'm sure I'm not going to be using it anytime soon. It just feels good to actually have something that I paid for. The only disc I got was the Upgrade Anytime thinger

I have a legit version of XP myself because it came with this computer though the reinstall was on a partition on the computer which I nuked. I could of back it up but I figured if i wanted it I could of downloaded another copy and used the legit license. I ended up throwing the license key away a few months ago though, I'm not a gamers fanatic, and there really are a some great games out there for Ubuntu one simple little game I like is armagetron, though there is flightgear, trigger, adanaxis and a bunch of 1st person shooters and whatever else so Linux does have quite a few games as well.... and I am not a latest game fanatic anyhow tbh though thx for the low petrol prices I do have crossover now :-O not that I have it installed... I did have office cooperate 2007 working but I dumped that for open office, though I still have the disk for that if I ever changed my mind and with a little but of experimentation it will work under wine I posted a link to the how-to to get office 2007 working on these forums a while ago, here's a link to the post.. http://www.110mb.com/forum/empty-t35682.0.htmlAnyhow that's my long ramble done

Yes they might all major distros are easy, and they bring something back to the community, take Red hat and Novell are the two largest sponsors of Linux kernel, and they are both big innovators like Desktop Effects (novell), AppArmor, Evolution and more. https://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/linuxkerneldevelopment.php

The funny thing is, at school they leave all the COA stickers on the desktops. I'm tempted to copy it down.... These IT guys are idiots! The revised wine hq is awesome!
