can you make your own layout besides having to choose a layout? or is there something else?

Are you are talking about the sitebuilder, or what you are allowed to upload?

I'm not certain how the sitebuilder works, but you could use a free website template and upload it by FTP,
modify one of them, or create your own site from scratch using a program like Dreamweaver or you could
write your own code (it really isn't that hard to learn). Basically you can do anything except copy a website.

get dreamweaver it's very helpful if you want to do it yourself. you can find it at the library look for dream weaver book the installation disk is in the back.
