DNS updates takes upto 72 hrs to propogate
Its frustrating to wait for upto 72 hrs everytime after making DNS changes...

This is because you ISP(internet service provider) refreshes the DNS cache only ONCE every 1-2 days.
The computer automatically connects to you ISP's DNS server to get updated records

But there is something called OpenDNS which offers an alternative DNS server for your computer, which has a DNS cache that is refreshed every 1-2 minutes (not days!)

So here's how can get updated dns records within a few minutes (sometimes seconds!)

Go to https://www.opendns.com/start

Then Choose : "Computer" and select your Operating System

Follow the instructions on the page!

This only works for those who are also using OpenDNS as their DNS server which is... minimal.

Old! grin
A typical ISP's DNS server is updated once or twice a day. But OpenDNS's DNS servers are updated pretty quickly(probably once per 15 mins). So if you are using OpenDNS, you'll experience faster propagation of DNS changes.

But as islesv said, a minority of internet users use OpenDNS's DNS servers.

Shouldn't this be in Link Heaven? Well I understand the point, but it's still a site though undecided

I've already posted on why I wouldn't use OpenDNS, the basic reason is that they're a 3rd party commercial company that has no reason to actually protect or preserve data. In fact they already deliver 404 ads on sites that 'supposedly' don't work. SO if you get to a domain that apparently hasn't propagated or doesn't work - you get taken to an ad page. Now who's to say that they won't start getting creative in what sites go down?
