Ok, im here! Whoo hoo. Linux is so wonderful. It took me over an hour to transfer all of my e-mail stuff from outlook to evolution but i got it done with 5 different programs.. lol. I used a combo of Evolution, Thunderbird, 2 converter programs 1 for the contacts, 1 for the e-mails. And Outlook. Biggest pain so far. But evolution is really nice now that i got it all working. One of the printers in my house i cant get working due to there being no drivers for it but that is ok, i still have another printer that worked without any settings being changes on it. Firefox is amazing in linux, so far i havent had a single error at all. Easily modified everything to change how it looks quite a bit. Got Compiz-Fusion Working Well. And lots of other minor changes. Linux is different but with a little reading, some pre-existing knowledge, and basic computer abilities i would say it is moderately easy to get setup and convert to from using windows. So far im impressed with just about everything in it. I dident have to do anything at all for it to configure my network and internet access. Being new to Linux the only thing im having any trouble with is the installing of a few things but i think i have gotten the hang of it now and how to use the terminal fairly well. Use Xubuntu. It's ment for slow machines, and it's very good!
For this if you want it to run fast go with like DSL (Damn Small Linux) Here: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.htmlAs far as i know it would work fast on an old machine being it so tiny. One of the next things im going to do is install a mini linux distro for my 5gig mini harddrive. When i get to it i will talk about it more. In the mean time i am going to continue messing with Ubuntu. It is soo cool.

No problem, When I was using Ubuntu I picked up a lot of links to all kinds of Ubuntu based sites. I just went to google and searched Top Ten Ubuntu Programs and other keywords like that.

I would suggest trying Mepis. It runs all the hardware I have seen except my webcam and is extremely stable. Has some very good wizards to set up your hardware. Mepis went from Debian based to Ubuntu and is now back to Debian based but the Kernel is different due to some special alterations and fixes. I have always said if Clem of Mint and Warren of Mepis could get together it would be the best of all worlds. Warren for the kernel and wizards with Clem for the interface and intuitiveness.

You're wrong there. DSL has a nearly complete desktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen with the best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD. In our quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop we've made many GUI administration tools which are fast yet still easy to use. What does DSL have?
XMMS (MP3, CD Music, and MPEG), FTP client, Dillo web browser, Netrik web browser, FireFox, spreadsheet, Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor (Ted), three editors (Beaver, Vim, and Nano [Pico clone]), graphics editing and viewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf (PDF Viewer), emelFM (file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, Rdesktop, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE (ADSL), a web server, calculator, generic and GhostScript printer support, NFS, Fluxbox and JWM window managers, games, system monitoring apps, a host of command line tools, USB support, and pcmcia support, some wireless support.

IMO, Amarok is a great media player; VLC is not so great, but it handles video very well. So... both for me - Software comparable to photoshop, something better than GIMP image editor. * ... just use Photoshop, if you have it - Software to use my tv tuner in my pc to watch/ record tv. * the MythTV suite might give you some clues - High quality linux games. * what kind? Nexuiz for FPS =p - Emulators for windows programs/games. * Wine for Win32 apps, Mono for .NET apps - Code Editor. * Geany

There's one thing you should know about Linux gaming: it sucks... as of now; it's also getting better as publishers are recognizing the potential.
MythTV is a bunch of packages that turn your Linux box into a DVR. You most likely don't need the whole thing, but take a look at some of the tools in the packages.
There's no Photoshop for Linux as of now, but it appears that Adobe is starting to develop more Linux software. At the moment, I'm pretty happy with Photoshop CS2 on Wine. Photoshop CS3 sucks on Wine so far.

However! it does do much that Photoshop does if not all. IMO it is easier to learn and work with than Photoshop.
