having issues,

i am trying to connect out to smtp, i have fscokopen. from back in the day for the proof of id, I was told fsockopen would work just fine and i didn't need sendmail on,
now i wondering if i need sendmail,
i am using google apps smtp server, i used it fine with phpbb, but joomla can't seem to connect to it

any ideas?

i get this error when email is supposed to be sent
SMTP Error! Could not connect to SMTP host.
SMTP Error! Could not connect to SMTP host.

anyone?

Follow the instructions at http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_from_an_existing_1.5x_version; you'll need to follow the link "Using an FTP client to upload files"

Thank you i have another question if thats ok
i get this error but i got sql and put the info in and stuff how do i stop it trying to create one

An error occurred while trying to create the database jamierothery_uk.
The user may not have enough privileges to create a database. The required database may need to be created separately before you can install Joomla!.

Assuming you have purchased the mysql upgrade, did you create a database, add a database user and password and assign privileges? The last step is easy to overlook.

I did all that bit again and it worked this time must of messed up somewhere then thank you for the help
