on my template trader site i wanted to make like a forum system that lets you post your templates, website services like a forum topic, but differently. SO to do this i thought to try to heavily modify a SMF. i would still keep the powered by SMF in the footer. but is this allowed? i want to start making ym own system, but that'll take atleast 1-2 years with my php knowledge.

You can customise SMF as much as you want as long as you leave the credit link and don't redistribute it. So it should be okay.
