I recently paid to have MySQL support activated and received an email message confirming that this had been done.  I logged on to check this and can see in the side panel that my maximum limit of MySQL DBs is 999 and at the moment I have created 0.  I wanted to install WordPress so I clicked on the MySQL DB option and got a message prompting me to enable MySQL support.  Since I have already done this, I don't know what's going wrong.  I note that I'm on Box17 which apparently had a problem with accounts recently, according to the "News" items at the top of the forums web page.  Could it be that I have activated MySQL support but that it's somehow not recognised because of the recent trouble with Box17?

Any help would be appreciated.

In situations like these, it's best to just wait it out for a few days and then if it still isn't working, log a ticket. If you really have to have your site up quickly, you can log a ticket immediately. Chances are it's just a lag in the system or MySQL was down when you tried to install the forum. Maybe try again now?
