at the moment, im not quite sure if this can be done at all.

what i would like to do is split my access database into a frontend and backend.
i want to host the backend online so i can take the front end anywhere and continue to add to it.

so rather than having the front end of a database on a LAN, i can use the front end anywhere and acces the backend from a WAN.

anyone know anything about this?

110mb runs under linux, so whilst you might be able to store an mdb file there, you won't be able to do anything to it.

You could download it, modify it, and upload it with changes every time, but that's about it probably.

Or you could use MySQL/SQLite; awesome stuff, really.

I agree with both of the above.

thanks for the posts guys.

Oddly enough, i really like microsoft access.

i guess the problem is that i don't particularly know much about sql... so i wouldn't know where to start..
hosting a backend on LAN is easy stuff, but to host a backend on a WAN is definitely a completely different question alltogether.

ah well..
thanks for the aswers.

Intrinsically, Access is designed for small-scale personal use, and so is SQLite. But MySQL is geared towards server use and concurrent access. If single-user access over the network is all you need, why can't you expose your Access database to the Internet?

i think it is possible but you need a windows server... which i only know of a few hosts that use them and only 1 is free but i would stick with their Linux one anyways Cheesy

but the only thing i give access credit for is making the layout ability very nice (via design view huh idk we use it in class for invoice design etc..) but with some basic html css sql php know how you can make a equally as good of one with a bigger compatibility... even SQLite has more compatibility then Access files as only one person (why inp says good for personal level) may access the file at a time compared to limitless for SQL

also instead of access DB i would actually use MSs DB over Access Wink (what ever the other MS DB is called)

i believe microsoft does have "microsoft SQL home server".  but im not entirely sure if thats related.
though i do know that you can split an access database to merge with an sql database.

If im being totally honest, I think this may be getting a bit out of my league lol.

anyways, thank-you for the helpful insights guys!
