6 NOV 2009 UPDATE:

This model has been postponed to 2010 with no specific month. But users will be notified at least 1.5 months before, should we even ever decide to implement ads.

---
Hi everyone, (if you have any upgrades enabled... then ignore this as your account won't be affected during this trial run. Also won't affect any box17 accounts, paid or free.)

Just so you don't freak out when you suddenly see 3rd party ads on your site for 2-7 days... sometime during July-Aug.

What will happen: You'll visit your site and you'll see a popover OR Adsense type of bar on top of site. This will last 2-7 days.

Reason: 110mb is changing it's business model. Going ads sometime end of 2009. See why here. It has to in order to get venture capital from investors and increase client growth rate by expansion of service and paid marketing campaigns.

See full explanation here: http://www.110mb.com/forum/whats-your-opinion-on-110mb-being-sold-t47684.0.html;msg406192#msg406192

* Whatever the path: current admins/mods stay unchanged. Since we know how to best run 110.

110mb is going to a corporation cry

Will you still be here Andre, Diemux? Or will a load of new people come. I dont want you guys to go  cry

This is truly a sad day for us all

Is it very likely that this new corporation will force ads on our accounts, if so, then 110mb will have lost ALL its customer statisfaction value, ALL its uniqueness, ALL its customers...

Are you allowed to tell us the name of said corporation?

Please put in the contract that current members with at least one upgrade can't get ads. undecided

I totally agree with fluffball. Although it is just to value the sites potential revenue, I think you could weave that into the contract...

I think millions of members will leave if ads suddenly start appearing on pages (I mean after the trial period). I think at a minimum if you have at least one upgrade, ads are not forced. I know if ads start appearing on my upgraded account, I'll be off somewhere else quicker than you can say "Pay £10 to turn ads off".

I am all for thefluffballs idea.

On second thought. This may be the best thing that has happened to 110mb [being sold]

Think of it this way, andre claims that speedsuccess (im guessing it is) has a bottomless pot of money*. We all know that it doesnt, by the recent restrictions. This corporation may be able to breathe some fresh air into it.

Although I seriously doubt it, I hope andre, you havent sold it to some money loving, drooling tycoon over the prospects of how much cash they can make over ads.

It could go both ways...

Brad, I'd still prefer to have the restrictions and no ads.

The problem is, selling it to a company, all I can see hapening is them wanting money, not taking the customers into account [much] and the service becoming sh***y

I think its time for me to find a VPS.

Hmm...  interesting.  Might I make a suggestion?  How about an email blast to all members?  To be honest, this thread kind of blurred in with the other sticky's at the top of General Chat and if it hadn't been for the quote in Brad's (I think it was him) sig I very well might have missed it.

And then I only want to echo what Brad originally asked.  According to the write-ups 110mb is backed by 2 companies.  One (eLabs) is supposed to have a "team of Linux, Solaris and Windows administrators to keep it running during the toughest technical challenges".  The other, Speed Success, backs 110mb financially.  So, do we lose both companies then?  And if we lose both companies do we lose Diemux, Andre, JSluiter, and company??

I was hoping that it wouldn't come to this, but hey, hopefully the next team of admins will keep the service running well, I also hope that we keep our current guys on the forum as-well, I think soon it would be a good idea for me to prepare for paid hosting.

I am also looking for a paid host. In preparation for the end of 110mb, all my relative urls that have been hardcoded (eg: /www/110mb.com/d/a/r/r/e/n/b/e/darrenbeige/htdocs/) have now been changed to a variable, declared at the top of my CMS. I'm ready and happy to change it to some other hosts filepath in under a minute.

Larger corporation, meaning some 2 bit company that will turn it into a major profit deal and give poop about the fate of the loyal users.

@ manicgames
Read the top of the "5 reasons" page. The blue 1 and 2 points.
Notice the words "lost the motivation and enthusiasm" because of constant downtimes and abuse. Notice "It offers more bandwidth and space then you've ever seen" and think about latest downgrade in February.
Change 2-4 months into 2-4 years, change +-15 000 users into hundreds thousands users, change lots of money into lots lots lots of money and you'll spot the similarities.

I think that you just loose your enthusiasm for the words "110mb is the best host ever". Sorry for you that you didn't saw that before and you did yell on every complainer.

@ all

This is the same hosting as every other - if we are talking about the competition on the market, about the technical and financial problems, about the abusers etc. - it's everywhere.

This is different hosting than any other because of that enthusiasm of Andre at the very beginning and because of the community that is here.

Let's be honest - most probably even Andre don't know what will be new owner policy after transaction. So anything could happend with our accounts. Be prepare.

Until transaction I'm not afraid for my accounts. Later... we'll see.

edit:
Do not be paranoid and do not panic. But until "sometime end of 2009/10" calmly prepare your "plan B" just for a case.
