Not a bad write-up, manicgames.  Although since I've been back I've noticed a few changes in how the 110mb forums work, and they should probably be added to make sure new forums users are aware of them:

  • Your Mods take user complaints seriously!  Baseless or not.  This means that you can post within the bounds of the ToS and forum rules and if someone complains about your post anyway, you are likely to come back the next day and find that the entire thread has disappeared without notice.  It's happened before!
  • 110mb has many types of users in its community, and some of these users have no idea about either what it is you're talking about, or various aspects of the world in general.  Fortunately, this lack of comprehension doesn't prevent them from making complaints to Moderators regardless.  They are likely to misinterpret an exchange of political evidence for an argument, and therefore as a flamewar, and complain on that basis.  And as stated above, your Moderators take user complaints seriously!
  • Because 110mb has many types of users in its community, practically anyone can find anything objectionable or offensive.  After all, everyone is offended by something!  Moderation sometimes happens on a per-complaint basis, regardless of merit... so get those complaints in early!
  • Moderation will also occur on the basis of whether Moderators feel that a topic needs to be "re-brought up", regardless of any determination about it on your part that prompted you to post a reply.  Consequently if you've been away from 110mb for a few months, come back and want to reply to a topic that's about a major part of your life, be aware that you have no right to do so, and may find your reply deleted within minutes on the basis that someone found the thread's topic offensive, and that the thread was a couple of months old.
  • Because practically anything can be complained about as objectionable, and because Mods take user complaints seriously, be prepared to accept the fact that you can't discuss obscure topics or unpopular opinions with any guarantee of the thread - let alone the post - being there the next day.  This is a private system, and you have no expectation of free speech rights.  Consequently, the 110mb forums have become an excellent place to discuss Britney Spears, the latest Hollywood releases, website questions, and to post pictures of your cat... provided nobody complains to the Moderators that your cat is offensive.  So be sure it's wearing a cute-as-a-button little ribbon when you take its picture, just to be on the safe side.
  • In short, the 110mb discussion boards aren't the place for disagreement.  Because disagreements can be construed as arguments, which can be re-interpreted as flamewars, which can invoke Modding privileges that neatly and decisively crush any ability to communicate meaningfully on the forums.  So the next time you want to share your views on a topic, or even present evidence for an unpopular view... remember to think twice, stifle how you really feel, and grin like a plastic action figure instead.  We don't want to hear your perspective in the forums - we want to hear our own!
  • If you find yourself offended by someone else's post... don't attempt to resolve your issue with the poster yourself, either in the thread about that very topic, or in a PM.  This might lead to an exchange of information and a new perspective on your part, and different perspectives in the world only cause more disagreement.  Instead, complain to the Mods immediately that the post was inherently offensive (after all, it disagreed with your own opinion, didn't it?) and the Mods will be more than happy to extend their Godlike powers on your behalf.  We can only wish that the real world was so convenient, where anyone who disagreed with your own opinion suddenly found themselves smote by a bolt of lighting, whether deserved or not.

In short, 110mb isn't the place for disagreements.  Moderators will go to great lengths in their efforts to keep the peace, but this zeal can have unfortunate and unintended consequences.  If you've ever taken a stroll through a cemetary, you'll know that they're quite peaceful... and for a very good reason.

I am not encouraging people to "make complaints" to mods, because people can take that the wrong way, we have what we need for the moment, if you wish to add something, make it a small vote and we shall vote what should be removed or amended.

manicgames, I wasn't trying to say that you're trying to encourage people to make complaints to moderators.  I think your write-up is pretty good, actually.   smiley

But I have been noticing that recently Forum Etiquette concerns have been overshadowing the ability to actually use the forums.  Maybe it's because we're so used to getting people who are new to the internet, and assume that anything that looks different is a result of that.  My post was a facaetious way of pointing out some of the problems that have been developing on the forums lately, because I think a desire for etiquette can be misapplied in ways that make the forums all but impossible to use.  But I share your concern for forum etiquette in general, and think it's very valid.  No argument there.

Yes, I understand. I'm getting over being sick and such, and have been in a rather annoyed move. I will re-word those ones you wrote, and add them to the post.

Thanks for your concern, I believe that everyone can learn about how to behave on a forum if they put forth the effort.

Sorry to hear it.  Hope you feel better soon - if you're still sick, I have a great family recipe.

...Thanks, but maybe not the best of ideas.  It was a facaetious way to address with the community of 110mb forum regulars some of the problems that have been going on recently in the forums.  Important for implementation of policy, but perhaps not the best thing to confront new users with when they arrive.

Unless of course the implementation continues this way, and it becomes all but impossible to have meaningful conversations on the forums.  In which case new users should probably be made aware that while it looks like a forum, it's not actually usable as such.

That's ridiculous, I know that you are trying to make it sound ridiculous, but 110mb and this etiquette show no resemblance to what you said, in any way. 110mb is extremely laid back on their forum rules, even more so than GameFAQs and trust me, that's saying something. GameFAQs is full of little spammers flaming newbies.

Even if all of this etiquette is was enforced an everyone was banned on a one strike basis, it still wouldn't be as harsh as somewhere like the GMC.

So, even if the 'implementation' continues, that isn't going to happen.

Why must you insist on dragging everything everyone does down? I don't care what your thoughts and opinions are to be quite frankly, and it's clear the other people think these guidelines are a good idea, so your one little opinion means nothing.

We should have a

110mbEPD

100mb
Etiquette
Police
Department

It could be a group of 3 members, with 2 blue stars (resembling police lights Duh ) that hand out etiquette tickets to badly formatted threads/posts

One blue and one red star would better resemble the police lights. Probably with a white one in the middle. Anyways, the idea of the 110mbEPD is really good. smiley

I think that, it should be headed by me, and Sergeant M (the melancholy ..) because we were the first to behind the idea, and then you have to have a job interview with us to join 110mbEPD

And I think we should have a  Police badge as the star - very reconisable

Im starting a new thread, because were hijacking this one, continue here
