It looks like a persimmon to me. I love those.

You have to wait 'til they ripen significantly more before you eat them... Or it feels like you're getting all the water absorbed out of your mouth. (because that's what happens. it's a protective mechanism for the plant)

Then again, some types are just not good to eat =D

It's a little longer than the persimmons that I'm familiar with, but the flavor of unripened persimmon is what nails it for me.

Yes, I can't show pics to google to tell me its name  cheesy

In India fruits are sold by illiterate people (99.9%) so they also don't know whats the exact name of uncommon fruits like this one. No chance of finding the label as well.

If it was poisonous, they would most likely not sell it at market...

But they do want you to go back and buy more. So if you went back and told them that it tasted like $#!+, they'd probably recommend a better method of consumption cheesy They'd know how to eat the fruit, even if they don't know what it's called.

No its not pomegranate , inportB guessed it right and its persimmon. I just read on Wiki about it and I am 100% sure that it was persimmon and nothing else.
BTW that hawker who was selling this fruit in the market was no where to be seen after selling that as many people were buying it at that time (as it was something new here so everyone was buying).  evil

er i hope you realize now that this fruit in particular is not eaten until it has ripened.  Most people leave it in paper bags until it is so tender, it can break with slight pressure.
