How do I make my Forum / Blog use SMTP to send out emails?
Solution

ABOUT:
Fsockopen function is disabled by default for security reasons. Because it could allow the bad guys to use Torrent and Proxy scripts like RapidLeech, SendSpace, or PHProxy. And they're against our TOS.

PURPOSE:
Fsockopen allows your script to use SMTP (send email) and some script RSS modules may need fsockopen to display their RSS feeds on your site.

HOW TO ENABLE FSOCKOPEN ON YOUR ACCOUNT:

1) You must have more then 30 posts made on the forum.

When you do, submit support ticket to "Account/Billing Department", with subject line: Enable fsockopen

And include the link to your forum profile. Also provide your 110mb username.

WARNING: If useless posts (to increase your post count faster) are found, you'll be banned from the forum. So don't post repetitive and unnecessary garbage like "thank you", or "nice site".

OR

2) If you're impatient and don't want to make 30 useful posts to get fsockopen free, then upgrade for instant activation.

If you already have "fsockopen" enabled, then here's how to have your script use SMTP email sending:

The free SMTP service we fully recommend is Yahoo.com.au (AU version provides a free SMTP/POP service). See alternative free SMTP services below in case some of your scripts like phpBB forum can't use Yahoo's SMTP.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE YAHOO'S SMTP SERVICE

First signup to http://yahoo.com.au

Once you signup...

Step 1:
Go to: "Options".

Step 2:
Go to: "POP Access & Forwarding".

Step 3:
Tick the circle "Web & POP Access".

Step 4:
Click on button "Save".

The details to use in your script would be:

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com.au

Port: 587 (If there's no port field in your script, then don't worry about this.)

Account Name/Username: username (DO NOT put @yahoo.com.au. So if your email is rose001@yahoo.com.au, then your username is: rose001)

Password: Your password

NOTE: Another good free SMTP provider we recommend is: http://www.unlimitedmail.org

It's SMTP settings (once you get free account) are:

SMTP Server Address: smtp.unlimitedmail.org
SMTP Username: USERNAME@unlimitedmail.org
SMTP Pass: YOUR PASSWORD FOR USERNAME

And last choice of free SMTP services is (use this one last if not at all): http://www.hotpop.com
